Wilkesboro, North Carolina
Wilkesboro NC, founded in 1800 and incorporated in 1847, is the
county seal of Wilkes County, and is located along the south bank of
the Yadkin River, directly opposite the slightly larger town of
North Wilkesboro.
Wilkesboro is probably best known as the home
to the celebrated
MerleFest,
 an
internationally acclaimed acoustic and bluegrass music festival held
every April. Nearby outdoor
attractions, including nearby
Stone Mountain State Park and
W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir, the many downtown shops and galleries and the multifaceted
cultural life in this charming foothills town ensure a great visit.
Wilkesboro's largest industry is
the Tyson Foods poultry processing plant; it is one of the largest
poultry plants east of the Mississippi River. The town also contains
several textile and furniture factories; one of the largest is the
Key City Furniture factory.
Noteworthy also is the fact that Daniel Boone, the famous explorer
and pioneer, lived for several years where Wilkesboro and North
Wilkesboro are located before moving west to Kentucky. Wilkesboro is
also the place the Tom Dula saga took place, an incident
immortalized in song and legend, most notably the murder ballard
"Hang Down Your Head, Tom Dooley" recorded in 1958 by the Kingston
Trio. Each summer the
Wilkes Playmakers also present a popular play based on the
legend. Visitors to Wilkesboro interested in local history may take
a
self-guided walking tour which includes stops at thirteen
historic buildings. Wilkesboro also has an outstanding greenway, the
Yadkin River Greenway,
which parallels the Yadkin River. 
One of the many artistic highlights of Wilkesboro are the
beautiful
Ben Long Frescoes in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, located at 200
Cowles Street. These classically executed frescoes of St. Paul the
Apostle are open for viewing by the public. Wilkesboro is also home
to Wilkes
Community College, a public coeducational two-year college which
has an enrolment of over 3,500 students. Located on the campus
is
The Walker Center, one of the major cultural arts and
performance venues in the area. Also in Wilkesboro is the
Wilkes Heritage Museum,
located in the historic Old Courthouse.
Stretching from the North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro area towards
Lenoir along Highway 268 is the historic "Happy Valley". Located
on the banks of the Yadkin River, Happy Valley was so named by the early
settlers who described the valley as "a place of beauty, peace and tranquility"
and the name aptly remains. A number of attractions are in the valley, including
Fort Defiance, the
Chapel of Rest and
Whippoorwill Academy and Village.
