West Jefferson, North Carolina
West
Jefferson NC is located in the eastern part of the North Carolina
mountains in Ashe County, and is in a n area known for the famous New
River, spectacular views and Christmas tree farming. The town has a
thriving business district and is noted for the murals that create a
'walkin g tour". The murals are the works of local artist and other
in North Carolina that depict the area's history.
As with many small towns, West Jefferson has a number of
distinctive and unique festivals, one of which is
Christmas in July,
featuring the very best in traditional mountain music and handmade
crafts. The
Ashe County Farmer's Market, open seasonally, is also located in West Jefferson
on the Backstreet in downtown
and is considered one of the premier farmer's markets in the
mountains.
St. Mary’s Church on Beaver Creek Road also features the Ben
Long Frescoes of the Mystery of Faith, Mary Great With Child, and
John the Baptist. 
Overlooking West Jefferson is the
Mount Jefferson
State Natural Area, which occupies the summit of Mount
Jefferson. Hiking trails, picnic tables and pavilions are some of
the amenities offered there. The
Ashe County Arts Council Gallery
is located in the Ashe Arts Center at
303 School Avenue, and has regularly changing exhibits of local
artists and performances of music, poetry and literature.
