Incorporated in 1871, Waynesville
is
Haywood County's oldest city, and the fifth largest city in
Western North Carolina after Asheville, Hickory, Morganton and Hendersonville. It was
founded in 1810 by Colonel Robert Love, who donated land for the
courthouse, jail and public square, and who named the town after his
former commander in the Revolutionary War, General "Mad" Anthony
Wayne. Rich in history dating back almost 200 years and known for
its southern hospitality and magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, Waynesville
is a tourist destination in its own right like Asheville and has a wealth of unique shops, arts
and crafts galleries, restaurants and accommodations.
The Waynesville area began to see major development
after the arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s, with
agriculture, lumber and tourism becoming the major industries. The
last passenger train to Waynesville was in 1949, but the railroad
line is still active and today Norfolk Southern Railway freight
trains still pass though the city on their way to Sylva in the west.
Waynesville has a number of distinct neighborhoods:
Downtown, Frog Level, Hazelwood, Laurel Ridge, West Waynesville and
Russ Avenue. The downtown area, once the primary retail business
center of the town, is now home to town government and
administration buildings, cafes, restaurants, shops, art galleries
and professional offices. It is known for its lofty shade trees, brick
sidewalks, benches, water fountains, and outdoor sculptures. Visitors to
Waynesville should place a visit to downtown on their A list. Frog
Level is an historic railroad district that was so named because of
frequent flooding of nearby Richland Creek and as the early home of
Waynesville's railroad depots. Today, Frog Level has experienced
some of the same type of revitalization as the downtown Main Street
area.
Hazelwood was primarily a working class town before
annexation by Waynesville, and is similar to West Waynesville, which is the industrial part
of city, and dominated by the Waynesville Commons shopping center
which is anchored by a Wal-Mart Super Store. Russ Avenue is a newer
business district of Waynesville and features restaurants, retail
stores, auto dealerships, banks and grocery stores.
Waynesville has two outstanding recreational
facilities: the
Waynesville Recreation Center located at 550 Vance Street,
and the
Old Armory Recreation Center at 44 Boundary Street. These
facilities serve the entire region and together offer an eight-lane
pool, water playground, gymnasium, weight room and indoor and
outdoor tracks. The Parks and Recreation Department also maintains
an
18-hole disc golf course, five neighborhood parks, two dog
parks, tennis courts, softball fields, a soccer field and a
Greenway near Richland Creek.
Located in the heart of the Appalachian
mountains, Waynesville is also host every year to the
 world
famous
FOLKMOOT USA, North Carolina's official international music
and dance festival, as well as the
Haywood Arts Regional Theatre,
Museum of North Carolina Handicrafts, and the
Red Barn Mountain Museum.
Nearby outdoor mountain attractions include the
Cataloochee Ski
Area, the
Blue Ridge Parkway
and three great forests and parks: the
Great Smoky Mountains
National Park, the
Nantahala National Forest
and the
Pisgah National Forest.
Close by also is the famous
Cherokee Indian
Reservation as well as the
Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center. Lake Junaluska is
notable as the site of the headquarters of the World Methodist
Council, a consultative body linking almost all churches in the
Methodist tradition.
