Valle Crucis, North Carolina
Located high in the mountains near
Boone,
Valle Crucis NC is an historic community that has been
around for 200 years. It is home to the famous Mast General Store,
the Holy Cross Episcopal Church and the
Valle
Crucis Conference Center, as well as many shops, galleries and studios
featuring handmade crafts and art, rustic furniture and pottery. The town is
North Carolina's first rural historic district and the entire
community is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Valle Crucis' name means "Vale of the Cross", a reference to
a valley in the area where three streams converge to form a shape
similar to an archbishop's cross. Valle Crucis began in the 1840's
when an Episcopal missionary, William West Skiles, came to the area.
He founded the first Episcopal Church in the region as well as the
Valle Crucis Mission School. Skiles also founded the first monastic
order within the Episcopal Church in the United States, the
Brotherhood of the Holy Cross. 
During recent years, Valle Crucis has transformed from
a little-known rural community to a popular destination for tourists
and new residents. The valley's serene scenic beauty and protected
location in the mountains proximate to the
Pisgah National Forest
have been factors in this recent development. The major attraction
in town is the original Mast General Store,
which offers visitors a true glimpse into bygone days.
