The small mountain town of Tryon, located southeast of Asheville, is well-known
for the equestrian ev ents held at the Foothills Equestrian
Nature Center
almost every weekend from April through October. The village also has a number
of art and craft galleries, and a nice selection of restaurants and
accommodations, and over the years, Tryon has earned the reputation as one of
the friendliest towns in the south. The premier event in Tryon is the running of
the annual
Block House Steeplechase, presented by the
Tryon Riding & Hunt Club.
Tryon, incorporated in the late 1800s as the Spartanburg and
Asheville Railroad came to the area, is the largest town in the area, and is out
in the shape of a circle. Many of the historic buildings on Trade Street were i n
place by 1900, including a general store, a pharmacy and a post office. Tryon
quickly grew as a resort town, bringing tourists to the area to enjoy the
mountain views and good climate. Over the years, Tryon has been home to many
artist, writers and crafters, including the stage actor William Gillette, most
famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. This mix
of locals, artists and retirees continues today, creating a vibrant, active
community.
Nearby
Pearson’s Falls is located off Hwy. 176 between Tryon and
Saluda. This botanical preserve is comprised of 268 acres of native
forest, spring-fed streams and a
moderate 1/4 mile trail to a 90 ft. waterfall. There are over 200
species of fern, flowering plants, algae and mosses in the
wildflower preserve.
