Sylva is a quaint town in Western North Carolina
that is surrounded by beautiful mountains and conveniently located
near many of the major natural and cultural attractions in Western
North Carolina. The town has a delightful
downtown area with many restaurants and shops, and is also home to
the historic Jackson County Courthouse.
Of interest also is
the famous
Judaculla Rock, a large stone covered with cryptic markings
that predates the Cherokee Indians and which are thought to be over
2,000 years old. The rock is the largest and best-known example of
rock art in North Carolina and is open to the public. To get there,
take Route 23 from downtown 1.3 miles to NC 107, then turn left onto
107. Drive 8 miles south on 107 and take a left onto Caney Fork
Road, County Road
1737. Go 2.5 miles then turn left onto a gravel road and drive 0.45
mile. The rock is on the right, and parking is on the left.
