Sparta, North Carolina
Located at the center of Alleghany County
and its county seat, Sparta NC is a classic southern small
mountain town, with the
Allegheny County
Courthouse as the primary building. There is an older
business district with overtones of years gone by and two shopping centers, a
satellite campus of
Wilkes Community College and
Alleghany Memorial Hospital.
The town also features one of the most complete public parks for a
community of its size, Crouse Park. The park features a basketball
and volleyball court, horseshoes, walking course and exercise and
play equipment for all ages from toddlers through adults. Near to
Sparta are two state parks -Stone Mountain State Park
and the
New River State Park,
home to the famous New River, the second oldest river in the world. 
Nearby
Lansing has a history of mining and dairy farming, both of which have
been replaced by Christmas tree farming. Frazier firs from Lansing are shipped
nationwide each Christmas. Lansing has a number of festivals each year,
including the famous
Ola Belle Reed Homecoming Festival which is held every August and highlights
regional folk and bluegrass music.
