Robbinsville, North Carolina
Located at the far western end of the state, Robbinsville
NC, the Graham
county
seat, was incorporated in 1893. Robbinsville is a delightful small town that is a welcome stop
for visitors seeking recreation in the vast wilderness areas that surround
it. The village is located in a region of Western North Carolina that contains
hundreds of thousands of acres of wilderness and one that is home to
some of the highest and most remote mountains east of the
Mississippi. Two-thirds of Graham County is National Forest. It is
the home of
Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest
and the
Nantahala National Forest,
and borders the
Great Smoky Mountains
National Park. Robbinsville, as county seat, is home to
the
Graham County Courthouse, an elegant building constructed of
locally quarried quartzite. 
Robbinsville is close to a number of mountain highways
that are famous for their scenic beauty and challenging drives -the
Cherohala Skyway
and the
Tail of the Dragon, considered by many to be one of the world's
best motorcycling and sports car roads. This extraordinary stretch
of highway has 318 curves in just 11 miles. Just a short distance
from Robbinsville also is the beautiful
Lake Santeetlah, a pristine mountain lake that has 76 miles of
mostly natural forested shoreline and is over 3,000 acres in size.
Nearby 10,230 acre
Fontana Lake with its world-famous dam is also a major tourist
destination. Fontana Lake is the largest lake in Western North
Carolina and offers visitors an abundance of recreational
opportunities. The village of Fontana Lake is also home to the
Graham County Museum of Prehistoric Relics.
