North Wilkesboro, North Carolina
North
Wilkesboro NC, located in Wilkes County, was founded in 1891 when
the Norfolk and Southern Railroad build a line into Wilkes County. The line
ended on the northern bank of the Yadkin River opposite
Wilkesboro, the county seat.
The town of North Wilkesboro quickly developed around the railroad tracks and
became home to many furniture, textile and leather factories. Lowe's Foods, one
of the southeast's largest supermarket chains and Lowe's Home Improvement
Warehouse, both started in North Wilkesboro, the former in 1954 and the latter
in 1946.
Due to the town's proximity to the nearby Blue Ridge
Mountains, North Wilkesboro for many years was nicknamed the "Key to the Blue
Ridge". Nearby
Stone Mountain State Park and
W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir make North
Wilkesboro a perfect spot to visit while enjoying these great outdoor
attractions. North Wilkesboro recently opened the
Yadkin River Greenway. The Greenway contains biking, jogging, and walking
trails which follow the Yadkin River and Reddies River for several miles between
the towns of North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro. One of the most popular spots on
the Greenway is a 156-foot-long bridge which spans the Reddies River at its
mouth, where it joins the Yadkin River. 
The major festival for the city is the
Brushy Mountain Apple Festival, which is held annually to celebrate the
local apple harvest. It is one of the largest single-day arts and crafts
festivals in the South.
Stretching from the North Wilkesboro and
Wilkesboro area towards
Lenoir along Highway 268 is
the historic "Happy
Valley". Located
on the banks of the Yadkin River, Happy Valley was so named by the early
settlers who described the valley as "a place of beauty, peace and tranquility"
and the name aptly remains. A number of attractions are in the valley, including
Fort Defiance, the
Chapel of Rest and
Whippoorwill Academy and Village.
North Wilkesboro is also home
to the
Wilkes Regional Medical Center, the major medical facility
in Wilkes County and the historic Kleeberg Liberty Theatre, still in operation,
on Main Street.
