Newton, North Carolina
Newton NC is located in
Catawba County in the foothills of Western North Carolina
and is the county se at. The city was selected as the seat in
1843and was incorporated later in 1855. Today it is the second largest
city in the county after
Hickory.
The city has experienced a steady rate of growth since 1970,
expanding from 7,600 residents to the current population of over
13,600. Newton has a number of qualities that have contributed to
this growth -challenging places to work, a low cost of living,
diverse cultures, a strong array of recreational opportunities and a
vibrant arts community. The city has earned a number of awards over
the years,
including seven Public Power Awards of Excellence in 2009.
Newton is home to the
Catawba County Museum of History,
located in the historic Catawba County Courthouse, an imposing
National Register Renaissance Revival structure built in 1924.
Other attractions in the area include the historic
Historic Newton Depot,
the Newton-Conover Auditorium, the Green Room Community Theatre and the
Hickory Motor
Speedway. The
City Parks & Recreation Department
also maintain five
parks that include numerous ball fields, tennis courts, walking &
jogging trails, picnic tables & shelters, a swimming pool and two
recreational centers complete with gymnasiums and a fitness center.
One of the more popular is the 27-acre
Southside Park
located on Highway 3212 Business South.
