Newland is the county
seat of Avery County and was incorporated in 1913 and has the distinction of being the highest county seat
east of the Mississippi. A recently remodeled classical courthouse overlooks a
quaint town square, bordered by shops and
churches
and a memorial to Avery County veterans. Newland is also home to the
Avery County
Historical Museum.
 Historically Newland's original name was “Old Fields of Toe”
because it is located in a broad flat valley and is at the headwaters of the Toe
River. It was also a mustering place for Civil War troops. Newland today is
also known for the many Christmas Tree farms which surround this small town.
The little community of Linville, located at the foot of
Grandfather Mountain, takes its name from the Linville River. Linville was
originally developed as a summer resort where families from the
North Carolina piedmont could escape the heat and mosquitoes that
characterize summers in the south.
Nestled at the confluence of Highways 221 and 183, Linville Falls
is a convenient stopping point for travelers from all directions. Linville Falls
is named after a beautiful two-tiered waterfall located nearby in
Linville Gorge.
