Morganton, North Carolina
Morganton NC, the county seat, is the
largest city in Burke County and encompasses an area of over
ni neteen square miles. It was named after Revolutionary War General Daniel
Morgan. The community is located on Interstate 40 and is bisected by US 70 and
64 and North Carolina Highways 181, 18, and 126.
Morganton offers big city services wrapped in small town
charm while
embracing technology, new development and progressive thinking. The heart of
Morganton is its vibrant downtown filled with restaurants, galleries, clothiers
and antique shops. One of the must-see art galleries downtown is the
Burke Arts
Council Jailhouse Gallery, located at 115 Meeting
Street.
The City of Morganton's 1,058-seat CoMMA Municipal Auditorium
at 401 South College Street also showcases a wide variety of
ever changing entertainment ranging from Broadway performances to the best in
Celtic music and dance. One of the artistic highlights of the Auditorium is the
Ben Long Fresco of the Nine Muses on the ceiling of the atrium.
Major festivals include The
Red, White and Bluegrass Festival that brings the best in
bluegrass to Morganton’s Catawba Meadows Park every July 1- 4.
Residents also enjoy great music and the family-friendly atmosphere
of Morganton’s TGIF Free Friday night concerts during the summer.
Each September the annual two-day
Historic Morganton Festival attracts upwards of 40,000
people. Craft and food booths line the downtown streets and well known musical
entertainers offer free concerts. Another unique event in Morganton is the
Festival of Lights in November, when the city kicks off the Christmas
season. 
The city is also home to the
Morganton Farmers Market, located at 300 Beach Street, open
Saturday mornings from May to October, and a number of outstanding local cultural
attractions. These include the
History Museum of Burke County, the
North Carolina School For The Deaf Museum,
the
Old Burke County Courthouse Heritage Museum,
Quaker Meadows Plantation, the
Morganton 1916 Railroad Depot and the
Senator Sam J. Erwin Jr. Museum.
Near Morganton lies Brown Mountain, home to a
mysterious phenomena referred to as the
Brown Mountain Lights.
Rising to an elevation of only 2,600 feet, this Brown Mountain has
been at the center of a mystery since the earliest days of recorded
history. For hundreds of years, unexplained lights have been seen on
the mountain to the astonishment of all that have seen them.
Morganton has a superb greenway system. The Catawba
River Greenway Park offers
year-round biking, jogging and strolling, canoeing and picnicking,
and features children's playgrounds, fishing piers, a 1200-foot
multilevel observation deck and a 170-foot bridge that crosses
Silver Creek.
