Maiden, incorporated in1883, is a small town located primarily
in Catawba County in the foothills of Western North Carolina. Part
of the township extends also into adjacent Lincoln County. Local
historians agree that Maiden was named after Maiden Creek, and in
the early days the township was the site of a cotton mill and
also became a trading center for the region.
Maiden is noted for its enthusiastic support of the
local
Maiden High School Blue Devils foo tball
team, and is known as "The Biggest Little Football Town in the
World". While that may not be completely true considering the size
of America, it is a true reflection of the great vitality and
home-town spirit of the residents of Maiden.
Over the years the city has enjoyed a large
industrial base, and continues to do so today. A number of textile
and furniture manufacturing companies, typical of the greater
Hickory area, call Maiden home.
Maiden has a number of parks and recreational
facilities. These include the superb
Recreation Center located on East Klutz Street that is open to
the general public, and the Maiden Municipal Park. The Recreation
Center facilities include a gym, banquet room, classrooms, softball
complex, playgrounds, picnic shelters and a walking trail. Maiden
has an annual
Christmas Parade held the Saturday after Thanksgiving and a
spring festival, Springfest, held every May.
