Le noir, the county seat of Caldwell County, is
a foothills city rich in history, diverse recreational and cultural opportunities, local attractions and a great quality of life. The first
settlement in Lenoir was known as Tucker’s Barn, named for the family who
settled in the area around the 1760s. The settlement became a large meeting
place for many gatherings and became so popular a fiddle tune was composed and
written titled “Tucker’s Barn.” Doc Watson eventually recorded this tune in 1964
on an album titled, The Watson Family Tradition.
Caldwell County, known as the Furniture
Capital of the South, is home to the "20
Miles of Furniture"
where numerous outlets and stores offer deep discounts. Located along or ne ar a
stretch of U.S. Highway 321 between Lenoir and Hickory, the area is
a required destination for any serious shopper looking for
furniture.
Caldwell County also contains more than 50,000 acres of recreational land, much of
it part of the
Pisgah National Forest.
Two of the outstanding local
attractions in
the county near Lenoir are the
Wilson Creek gorge area and the
beautiful
T.H.
Broyhill Park, on Lakewood Street, which has a half-mile nature loop circling a man-made lake. A
joint project of the Broyhill Family Foundation and the city of
Lenoir, oriental gardens on the park set the tone of elegance and serenity where
walkers and joggers can enjoy a lovely nature sanctuary.
Lenoir, the largest city in Caldwell County, is also home to the Caldwell County Historical Society Heritage Museum
and the
Tuttle Educational State Forest, an
instructional natural resource with ecological displays and programs.
Stretching from Lenoir towards Wilkesboro along Highway 268 is the
historic "Happy
Valley". Located
on the banks of the Yadkin River, Happy Valley was so named by the early
settlers who described the valley as "a place of beauty, peace and tranquility"
and the name aptly remains. A number of attractions are in the valley, including
Fort Defiance, the
Chapel of Rest and
Whippoorwill Academy and Village.
The Village of Cedar Rock is the smallest and the youngest of
Caldwell County’s municipalities. Built around Cedar Rock Country Club, the town
is nestled at the foot of the Brushy Mountains. Gamewell,
incorporated in 1981, is situated midway between Lenoir and Morganton along NC
Highway 18 and is primarily residential.
