Jefferson,
the county seat of Ashe County was established in 1800 and was one
of the
first towns in the United States to be named after President Thomas
Jefferson, who at the time was Vice-President.
 Originally called Jeffersonton, the name was later changed to Jefferson. The ancient New
River, one of the oldest rivers in the world, flows through the town.
The
Museum of Ashe County History is located in the historic
1904 Ashe County Courthouse building in Jefferson and has exhibits
pertaining to the history of Ashe County and its people. The largest
hospital in Ashe County is located also in Jefferson, the
Ashe Memorial Hospital as w ell as the Ashe campus of
Wilkes Community College.
Nearby
Lansing is home to the famous
Ola Belle Reed Homecoming Festival, a celebration of mountain
music. Lansing's classic small town setting is enhanced by the
surrounding hills and Phoenix Mountain (elevation 4,170 feet)
in the background as well as the homes dotting the narrow, tree
lined streets.
