Hot Springs, located on the French Broad River about 40 minutes north of
Asheville, was started when hot mineral springs were discovered in 1792. It is
reported that people were visiting the springs by 1778 for the
waters' reported healing properties. In 1828, a major road was
constructed through the current town, the Buncombe Turnpike, making
the area more accessible and Hot Springs became a famous
resort town that catered to folks looking for
relaxation in the mountains as well as healing in the mineral springs. Today,
Hot Springs still welcomes visitors who wish to explore and play in the
surrounding mountains, and the naturally occurring hot springs are still an
attraction as well. The major center if you are interested in trying the hot
springs yourself is the
Hot Springs Resort & Spa located on Bridge Street.
The
Appalachian
Trail runs along downtown's Bridge Street and climbs the
mountains on either side of the river and
Whitewater Rafting and
kayaking are popular on the French Broad River itself. There are
numerous other hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, and sightseeing
opportunities in the nearby
Pisgah National Forest.
