Highlands,
incorporated in 1883, is located in the heart of the beautiful Nantahala
National Forest. A n affluent and quaint resort town
with an large annual influx of families that own second homes, Highlands
has an
abundance of fine restaurants, shops, accommodations and upscale stores. Outdoor
recreational opportunities abound, including hiking, fishing, boating, horseback
riding and rock climbing. Highlands is also home to the
Highlands Playhouse,
which for over 50 years has provided great summer stock theatre. Other great
local resources in this cultural rich mountain town are the
Highlands Nature Center, the
Highlands Biological Station,
The Bascom Center for the Visual Arts, the
Martin-Lipscomb Performing Arts Center and the
Hudson Library located at 554 Main Street.
The
Scaly Mountain Outdoor Center in nearby Scaly Mountain offers
snow tubing in the winter and summer tubing on artificial turf
slopes. Also, only two miles from Highlands is the Dry Falls
waterfall in the
Nantahala National Forest,
easily accessible and worth the trip.
