Hayesville, incorporated in
1913, is the county seat of Clay County, and is located at the
far western edge of the North Carolina Mountains. The focal point of the town is the historic
county seat courthouse, built in 1888 where many of the county’s festivities are
held. Hayesville is also home to the
Clay County Historical & Arts Council Museum
and the
Peacock Playhouse where performances by the local theatrical group,
The Licklog Players, can be seen. The museum is housed in the
Old County Jail which was constructed in 1912 and used as a
jail until 1972. Another slice of history is
The People's Store (68 Church Street), a general store in
operation since 1946 and now open as a small museum. Hours by
appointment only by calling 828-557-0759.
Nearby
Chatuge Lake, a TVA lake, has over 130 miles of shoreline, much of which can
never be developed, and provides wonderful recreational
opportunities for residents and visitors alike. This beautiful lake
sets the tone for Hayesville. Few mountain cities can boast of such
a great natural resource right in their own backyard.
