With roots that date back to the mid 1800's, Glen
Alpine began with the arrival of the Southern Railroad. Originally called Turkey
Tail by railroad workers, Glen Alpine also was named Sigmundsburg (after Edmund Sigmum, a mill founder) and then Glen Alpine Station. In the early 1870's
the town was home to one of the then largest wooden structures in North
Carolina, the Glen Alpine Springs Hotel, which was said to have had as many as 100
guests at a time. After the hotel closed in 1890's, the town's name was finally
changed to just Glen Alpine. Glen Alpine today is primarily a residential
community, and is also home to the
Lake James Cellars winery.
