Located on the far eastern edge of the
mountains, Forest City began as a crossroads on the
Shelby-Rutherfordton and Spartanburg-Lincolnton Roads and was incorporated in 1877 as Burnt
Chimney,
with the name changed to Forest City in 1887 after a prominent
citizen, Forest Davis. This small city in the
foothills, once a bustling mill town, now has much to offer
visitors, including an large selection of stores and restaurants.
In 1914, the Forest City Betterment Club embarked on a project to
beautify the town's Main Street and today the original landscaped
medians and fountain still exist. In 1927, the town
was selected as
one of the ten most beautiful and best planned towns in the United
States by the US Department of Agriculture.
Forest City is famous for
the great display of Christmas lights that brighten the city every
holiday season -over half a million lights sparkle in the downtown
area at Christmastime. Forest City is also home to the
Bennett Classics Antique Auto Museum, the
Rutherford County Farm Museum
and
McNair Field, the home of the semi-professional baseball team
the Forest City Owls.
