Founded by Williams
Dills in 1884 just after the coming of the Western North Carolina
Railroad,
Dillsboro
was incorporated in 1889. An early destination stop not only because
of its scenic mountain location and railroad, this quaint
mountain village had many popular restaurants and tourist hotels,
one of which, the historic Jarrett House, is still serving meals.
Today Dillsboro is well-known as one of the best places to board the
Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, a very popular tourist excursion
train.
Dillsboro is also going to be the future home to the
Southern Appalachian Women's Museum
located in the
Monteith Community Park. This local history museum will be open
to the public in the near future, and will
honor and recognize generations of
Appalachian women for their work both in and out of the home. Plans
include permanent displays of historical artifacts, traveling
exhibits and educational shows, and a restored landscape plan that
will showcase local heritage and heirloom gardening.
