Conover is located in the foothills of Western North Carolina,
in
Catawba County, and is a small town th at
offers historic charm, access to excellent recreational
opportunities, entertainment and shopping, especially if you are in
the market for furniture. Historically, Conover was home to a number
of important furniture manufacturers including the former Conover
Furniture Company. The origin of the name Conover is uncertain but
it is known the city was charted in 1876 and incorporated in 1877.
Conover was also home at one time to Concordia College, an
institution of higher education that trained Lutheran ministers. The
college closed in 193 5
after the college buildings were destroyed by fire. Today the city
has several large industrial parks which make Conover one of the
main employment bases in Catawba County, and daytime residency,
because of this, is over 20,000.
Conover has eight neighborhood parks, the most centrally
located is the
Downtown Park located on 2nd Avenue NE just across from both the
city hall and the police department. This great little park is the
geographical and cultural heart of Conover, and is home to a large
gazebo that has become the unofficial symbol of the town. Along with
the gazebo, the park also contains walking trails, benches, picnic
tables and play equipment for children. Another of the town's
outstanding parks is
Hunsucker Park. This 1.13 acre park has playground equipment,
including a slide, merry-go-round and other recreational equipment.
