Connelly
Springs is
located in eastern Burke County between Hickory and Morganton, and
was originally named Happy Home. The first settler in the area was
William Lewis Connelly and in the 1880's the town's name
was changed to Connelly Springs after the discovery of mineral
springs by Mrs. Elmira Connelly. The town, because of the popularity
of the springs for natural healing, soon became a resort destination
with a number of large hotels constructed for visitors. These
former hotels included The Connelly Mineral Springs Hotel, The Sides Boarding
House, The Connelly Springs Inn and The Haliburton Hotel.
Connelly Springs was incorporated in 1920, and
later again in 1989, and eventually became a bedroom community with
residents employed in the textile and furniture manufacturing
facilities in neighboring towns. Recently Connelly Springs has seen
considerable growth, a new town hall was opened in 2002 and numerous
community projects undertaken as well as a revitalization of the
business sector along NC Highway 70. Connelly Springs is also
home to the
Raintree Cellars winery, and adjacent to the community is the
beautiful
South Mountains State Park.
