Claremont, North Carolina
Claremont NC is a small town located in the foothills of Western
North Carolina in
Catawba County, and has roots that date back to the early
1800's when the area around present day Claremont was first referred
to as "Charlotte Crossing". Later the name was changed again
to "Setzer's Depot" bu t
ultimately the name was changed in 1892 to Claremont, after an early
settler, Clare Sigmon. The town has seen strong economic growth over
the years and is blessed with large and small businesses that
provide a good tax base. These include high quality furniture
industries and two fiber optical and coaxial cable manufacturing
plants within the city limits. The Norfolk-Southern Railroad also
passes through the city limits.
An attraction in the Claremont area is the
Bunker Hill Covered Bridge located on Highway 70, a few miles
east of town. The bridge spans Lyles Creek as part of a road that
originally followed a Native American trail and is one of only two
covered bridges left in the state. Claremont also has lovely
downtown park,
Claremont Park located on East Main Street, next to Claremont
Elementary School. This park is 21 acres, and has tennis courts,
horseshoe pits, sheltered picnic areas, a pavilion and an
amphitheater, and a paved quarter mile walking trail.
