Catawba
is a small town in the heart of the beautiful Catawba Valley, and is
one of only two municipalities in
Catawba County that borders the Catawba River. The name
Catawba recalls the Cat awba
tribe of Native Americans who once inhabited the area and Catawba is
one of the oldest towns between Salisbury and Asheville as a result
of having been selected to be the site
of an early railroad station. Trains ran to the town before the
Civil War, as early as 1859, and continue to do so today.
The
Town of Catawba Historical Association maintains a local history
museum in the oldest brick building in town, the former residence of
Dr. Q.M. Little, circa 1873, to showcase local history. The museum
is located at 101 First Street SW downtown and contains five rooms
of unique local history. Visitors to the museum should call
828-241-4077 for scheduling and information.
Catawba has an annual
Catawba Festival and Parade held each November, which features
vendors offering everything from crafts and toys to festival food
and fun.
