Bryson City, North Carolina
Unique among mountain
communities, Bryson City NC, the county seat of Swain County, is
located right next to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Over
40 percent of this great national park is located in Swain County,
and the park sets the tone for this lovely mountain city, with
outdoor recreation as one of the major highlights. There are a large
number of accommodations for such a small city, largely because of
the number of visitors who wish to visit the park.
Bryson City, because of its central location in the mountains
is also a great jumping off point to many of Western North
Carolina's natural and cultural attractions as well, including the
popular
Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, which has departures
from downtown, and the nearby
Cherokee Indian Reservation. The train depot at Bryson City is
also the venue for "Music in the Mountains", live performances that
take place every Saturday evening from June through October.
Motorcycle and sports car enthusiasts also make Bryson City their
base camp for riding the "Tail
of the Dragon" at nearby Deal's Gap, a section of Highway 129
that has 318 curves in only 11 miles. A number of great mountain
rivers flow through Swain County, the most popular are the Nantahala
and the Tuckaseegee Rivers. Both offer great
Whitewater Rafting and
other recreational opportunities. A famous and long established
outdoor center is also located near Bryson City on the Nantahala,
the
Nantahala Outdoor Center, offering everything from great dining
on the river to world-class whitewater rafting.
