The quaint upscale resort village of Blowing Rock sits aside the Eastern Continental
Divide in the Northern Mountains of Western North Carolina and is
centrally located to most of the major area attractions. There is a
professional summer stock theatre (the
Blowing Rock Stage Company), wonderful festivals,
Art
in the Park and the
Blue Ridge Wine and Food Festival, and
abundant outdoor recreational opportunities, including skiing at
Appalachian Ski Mountain. Its rich history stretches back to
the 1500s, when the great explorer Desoto supposedly looked for gold in the
area. The town is named after its main attraction,
The Blowing Rock,
cliff walls that form a flume through which the north-west
wind sweeps with such force that it returns light objects cast over
the cliff.
Another of Blowing Rock's main attractions is the
Moses H Cone Memorial Park. The park, once a 3,500 acre estate, was donated by
Moses H. Cone and now includes 26 miles of horse and carriage
trails, which are also used for hiking, cross-country skiing and a
deer park, with fishing in Bass Lake.
