For many years, Western North Carolina, including
the Asheville area, has seen considerable growth in the number of gated, private
mountain communities. These planned developments are popular with folks who are
interested in having a second, or vacation home in the mountains, and who value
security, and peace of mind in regards to their home when they are not in
residence. There is a considerable variation in the type, size and range of
amenities offered in the various communities as one would expect. The smaller
ones typically are less than 100 acres, and offer very little in the way of
features except for a gated entrance and common areas, while the larger
communities can be as large as 4000 acres and offer a full range of amenities,
including luxury clubhouses, 18-hole championship golf courses, lakes, custom
luxury homes on spectacular mountaintop settings and even private airports.
