The slopes of the Western North Carolina mountains provide a wide variety of trails, from easy beginner to expert. The views are breathtaking and the facilities modern. Many of the resorts feature their own snow making equipment. Most people don’t associate the south with skiing, but the Western North Carolina mountains, with their higher elevations and colder winters, do have excellent skiing. Wolf Ridge Ski Slopes is the closest to Asheville, a 30-minute drive north on Highway 19/23.

Sugar Mountain Resort
About: A full-service alpine snow ski and snowboard area. Features a 1,200-foot vertical drop, 18 slopes and trails, eight lifts, and a longest run of 1½ miles. Tubing, ice skating and snowshoeing also.

About: Beech Mountain is the highest ski area in eastern North America at 5,506 feet. One high-speed quad lift, six doubles, one J-bar and one rope tow. Skiing, snowboarding and tubing.
