Running, both road and trail, has a major part of the athletic scene in Asheville and the western North Carolina Mountains. One of the more important running organizations, since its founding in 1972, is the Asheville Track Club. Located in Asheville, the ATC has been instrumental in promoting running as a sport and providing a means for interested individuals to participate and improve as runners. Another object of the club has been the holding of races for all levels and types, from fun runs for young children to championship races such as the Shut-in-Ridge Trail Run. Their website has the most comprehensive race calendar for Western North Carolina. Asheville also is home to three premier running stores, Foot RX Running on Hendersonville Road, Jus' Running located on the north side of town on Merrimon Avenue. Both of these stores are valuable resources for runners new to town and the Asheville Running Company located in the River Arts District on 346 Depot Street.
If you have a child who likes to run, or who you would like to introduce to running, check out the annual Blue Ridge Classic Fun Run Festival held this year on Saturday April 18th at AC Reynolds High School in the evening. 1K, 2K and 3K races on the track and through the school campus, held right after the prestigious Blue Ridge Classic High School Track Meet.
