Si nce its founding in
1972, the Asheville Track Club has been instrumental in promoting running as
a
sport and providing a means for interested individuals to participate and
improve as runners. Another object of the club has been the holding of races for
all levels and types, from fun runs for young children to championship races
such as the Shut-in-Ridge Trail Run. Their website has the most comprehensive
race calendar for Western North Carolina. Two of the more
important annual races on the calendar are the
Bele Chere 5K, held in August in downtown Asheville during the
festival, and the
Biltmore/Kiwanis 15K/5K Classic held every May on the grounds of
Biltmore Estate. Another great race is the
Blue Ridge Classic 5K Mountain Challenge, held every April on
the campus of AC Reynolds High School in Asheville.
For
youth aged 6 to 18, Asheville has one of
the country’s premier Junior Olympics Track and Field teams, the
Asheville
Lightning. For more information about
USATF Junior Olympics and their summer
track and field and fall cross-country programs, visit the Lightning website at
