Mount Jefferson in
the
Mount Jefferson State Natural Area is a
National Natural Landmark. Two short trails give hikers spectacular views of the
New River and the surrounding mountains. One of the more interesting features of
the area is Luther’s Rock Overlook. No bicycles or camping are allowed. There
are picnic areas and canoeing can be done at the nearby
New River State Park.
Mount Jefferson has a self-guided nature trail for hikers who wish to take their
time and learn about the natural history of the area. By special request, park
naturalists lead guided walks explaining the area’s natural history and legends.
The Park Service also offers a program history that advertises upcoming hikes
and events.

Directions: From Asheville, take I-40 East to Hickory. Use 321 North through
Blowing Rock and West Jefferson to US 221 North. Mount Jefferson State Natural
Area is located a half-mile south of Jefferson. From NC 163, take SR 1149 to the
park entrance on SR 1152.
