The
YMI Cultural Center,
located in the
Pack Place Education,Art & Science Center, is an enduring asset in the city of
Asheville. Housed in a local landmark building that is listed on the
National Register of Historic Places, the YMICC runs programs in
cultural arts, community education and economic development.
Commissioned by George Vanderbilt in 1892, this beautiful pebbledash
and brick building of Tudor design was built by and to serve several
hundred black craftsmen who helped construct the Biltmore Estate.
Today, the newly refurbished center continues its tradition of
community service. Its galleries feature exhibits, programs, classes
and performance that present African-American art, culture and
history at their best. The YMI Cultural Center is located behind
Pack Place at Eagle and Market streets.
