Scottish Tartans Museum

Located in Franklin, NC, the Scottish Tartans Museum focuses on the history of Scottish Tartans—how they were woven and used in dress over the centuries since 325. Cultural programs of weaving, music, and dance are also provided at the Center throughout the year by Friends of the Museum and volunteers. Ongoing educational programs and exhibits interpret Scottish history and culture, including migrations of the Scots, concentrating on the Scots who settled in Western North Carolina. The museum is over 2,200 square feet and contains the official registry of all publicly known tartans and is the only American extension of the Scottish Tartans Society.  Visitors are invited to view their family tartan on computer and trace their Scottish heritage in the tartan research library. The Center also has a gift shop offering a large selection of Scottish and Celtic treasures.
