Oteen VA Hospital
Historic District
Located in the Oteen
district of Asheville on US Highway 70 just beyond the intersection of Highway
70 and Riceville Road, the Oteen Veterans Administration Hospital District is a
striking collection of massive yellow stucco Georgian Revival and white frame
Colonial Revival buildings. As Riceville Road leaves Highway 70 at the foot of
the hospital’s lawn it runs north through the district and divides employees’
dormitories and other residential structures to its west from the facility’s
main campus.
The structures included in the Historic District were built between 1924 and
1940 to replace a large collection of frame buildings which had served as U.S.
Army General Hospital No. 19 in the late teens and early twenties. The work
accomplished at the Oteen location turned out to be one of the nation’s best and
most beautiful permanent military hospitals. The focus of care at the hospital
was tubercular and respiratory treatment. Today the hospital still functions as
a major care center, although some of the outlying buildings have been converted
to apartment use.
